Transport?

One of the biggest assumptions many visitors make is that they need a rental car to enjoy Ireland.

Sometimes that’s true.

Often it isn’t.

During my years guiding visitors around Ireland, I met plenty of travellers who explored the country successfully without ever getting behind the wheel.

For some visitors, travelling without a car can actually make a trip more enjoyable.

You avoid unfamiliar roads, parking worries, fuel costs and the challenge of driving on the left-hand side of the road.

The key is understanding where public transport works well and where it doesn’t.

The Short Answer

Yes, it is entirely possible to visit Ireland without a car.

In fact, some of Ireland’s most popular destinations are easily reached by train or coach.

These include:

Dublin

Belfast

Galway

Cork

Kilkenny

Derry

Killarney

If your goal is to experience Ireland’s cities, larger towns and a handful of famous regions, you can have an excellent trip using trains, buses and the occasional taxi.

However, if you want to explore remote peninsulas, hidden beaches and quiet rural areas, a car becomes much more useful.

Who Should Consider Travelling Without a Car?

Travelling without a car is often ideal for:

Solo travellers

Couples

First-time visitors

Visitors nervous about driving on the left

Travellers interested in cities, history and culture

People taking shorter trips

It’s often less suitable for:

Families carrying lots of luggage

Travellers wanting maximum flexibility

Visitors hoping to explore remote areas every day

The Best Places to Visit Without a Car

Dublin

Dublin is one of Europe’s easiest capitals to explore on foot.

Many of the city’s major attractions are within walking distance of one another.

Public transport includes:

Dublin Bus

DART coastal railway

LUAS tram system

Most visitors find they don’t need a car in Dublin at all.

In fact, I generally advise against renting one until you’re leaving the city.

Belfast

Belfast is another excellent car-free destination.

Many attractions can be reached on foot or by public transport.

You’ll find:

Titanic Belfast

City Hall

Cathedral Quarter

St George’s Market

Ulster Museum

all easily accessible without driving.

Galway

Galway is compact, walkable and full of character.

Many visitors use Galway as a base for:

Connemara tours

Day trips to the Aran Islands

Excursions to the Cliffs of Moher

without needing a car themselves.

Killarney

Killarney is one of Ireland’s most visitor-friendly towns.

Many visitors arrive by train and use organised tours to explore:

Killarney National Park

Ring of Kerry

Dingle Peninsula

Where a Car Makes a Big Difference

Ireland’s most memorable landscapes are often found beyond the rail network.

Examples include:

Donegal

Beara Peninsula

Parts of Connemara

The Burren

West Cork

The Glens of Antrim

Much of County Mayo

Public transport exists in many of these areas, but services can be infrequent and journeys often take much longer.

If exploring rural Ireland is the main purpose of your trip, consider hiring a car for at least part of your visit.

A Hybrid Approach

This is often my favourite solution.

Use trains and coaches between major destinations.

Then rent a car for two or three days when exploring more rural regions.

For example:

Week One

Dublin

Belfast

Galway

using public transport.

Week Two

Pick up a rental car and explore:

Connemara

Kerry

Donegal

at your own pace.

Many visitors find this gives them the best of both worlds.

The Advantages of Travelling Without a Car

There are some real benefits.

Lower Stress

You don’t have to navigate unfamiliar roads.

Lower Costs

You avoid:

Rental fees

Fuel costs

Parking charges

More Time to Enjoy the Journey

Ireland’s rail routes are often scenic.

Instead of concentrating on the road, you can simply watch the landscape pass by.

The Disadvantages

The biggest disadvantage is flexibility.

Public transport follows a timetable.

Ireland’s most memorable places sometimes don’t.

You may occasionally find yourself wishing you could stop at a viewpoint, a beach or a village that isn’t on the route.

That’s the trade-off.

My Advice

If you’re visiting Ireland for the first time, don’t assume you need a rental car.

Many visitors enjoy highly successful trips using trains, coaches and the occasional guided excursion.

But don’t assume public transport can take you everywhere either.

Ireland rewards curiosity and detours, and a car remains the best way to explore many of the country’s quieter corners.

The right answer depends on the kind of trip you’re hoping to have.

For some travellers, hiring a car is essential.

For others, it’s entirely unnecessary.

The important thing is choosing the approach that suits your itinerary rather than following a one-size-fits-all rule.

<h3
