About Quiet Ireland
Hello, I’m Colm.
I’m Irish, and I’ve spent much of my life exploring this island, first through work and later by helping visitors discover it for themselves.
For more than thirty years I worked as a film editor, shaping stories and helping people understand the world through them. When I left broadcasting, I found myself drawn in a different direction. For the next ten years I guided visitors around Ireland, sharing places I love with travellers from all over the world.
Those years on the road taught me something.
Most visitors don’t need another list of attractions.
They need honest advice.
They want to know whether they’re spending their time in the right places, whether they’re trying to do too much, and what Ireland is really like beyond the photographs.
Again and again, I found myself having the same conversations.
“Should we stay longer here?”
“Is this worth the detour?”
“What’s your favourite part of Ireland?”
The answers were rarely the ones people expected.
The places that stayed with people most were often the quieter ones. The unexpected village. The walk they almost skipped. The evening spent listening to music in a small pub instead of rushing to the next destination.
Quiet Ireland grew out of those conversations.
A Different Way to Experience Ireland
There’s an old Irish saying:
Ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine
We live in one another’s shelter.
I love that phrase because it captures something I’ve always felt about Ireland.
The scenery may bring people here, but what they often remember most are the human moments. A recommendation from a local. A conversation with a stranger. A kindness they weren’t expecting. A story shared over a cup of tea.
The best moments are often the ones that never appeared in the guidebook.
That’s why I believe Ireland is best experienced at a gentler pace.
Not by trying to see everything, but by giving yourself enough time to enjoy where you are.
A beach in Donegal.
A winding road through Connemara.
A morning in the Mourne Mountains.
An evening wandering through Belfast with nowhere particular to be.
Those are the moments that stay with people.
Why Quiet Ireland Exists
After years of guiding visitors, I realised there was room for a different kind of travel website.
One that wasn’t driven by hype or bucket lists.
One that valued experience over spectacle.
One that helped people make better decisions rather than simply giving them more choices.
Here you’ll find:
- Practical travel advice
- Realistic itineraries
